what are some current issues in elementary education?

What are some current developments or issues in education? I need to answer this for an application. Thanks!

1. It seems to me that one is equity (gender, socio-economic,ethnicity) in part due (I'm guessing)to No Child Left Behind. I mean it has always been an issue but is seemingly in the spotlight. This is the first one that came to mind. You might want to think in terms of categories (instruction: differentiated; curriculum; assessment: authentic/reflection; and so on.)
2. I know that many teachers are upset that there is so much focus on standardized testing these days. The classes are all about teaching to the tests. It makes it hard to make learning fun anymore.
