What are some gender issues in Education?
I'm doing a job application and it asks for: Awareness of gender equity issues and strategies to address the needs of girls' and boys' education. I'm a bit stumped and need some help... Its for a primary teaching job aka years kindergarten to year 6 Thanks!

- I think it has mostly to do with how teachers sometimes treat boys differently from girls. In science or math class giving preference to boys over girls. Or giving boys more attention because they "need" it more. Or picking or calling on more boys than girls. In gym class, expecting more from boys than girls. You can address these issues by treating boys and girls the same. Hope it helps a little.
- get some contacts in the Professional community. Texas Instruments and Raytheon have company initiatives to promote Math and Science to ensure that kids either young girls or young men take an active role in Math and Science education. Guidance counselors and your Department heads may have policies that you are require to follow.
- There are some things to consider: * differences in learning styles b/w boys & girls * behaviour of boys v's girls * impact of teacher's gender - abundance of female teachers over male teachers (issues of lack of masculinity & male role models to assist boys in their education - some may say is linked to the educational outcomes of boys). There are research papers on this. http://education.qld.gov.au/students/advocacy/equity/gender-sch/issues/matter-men.html http://www.aph.gov.au/House/committee/edt/eofb/subs/sub118.pdf *http://www.dest.gov.au/archive/schools/publications/1998/genderequity/8_3.htm (this link will give you strategies). Even though you are aiming for kindi through to yr 6, a teacher's actions during these years is a contributing factor to the way the student is shaped in the future. hope this helps.
